As the overture
fades, Beatrice Salem (Aunt Bea) ambles up to the lectern to begin today's
lesson in "Witchcraft 101". Center stage is the silhouette of a "Magic
Box" or you might say a window into our characters lives. She commences
her lecture by airing some "dirty laundry" about the "family" and then
gives us the opening number --"It Takes A Little Magic".
Once this tune is done she
finally gets around to starting our "lesson" for the day and we are introduced
to her niece Suzanne Salem. Suzanne is having feelings that make her wonder
if there is more to the world than being a witch with - "Merely A
Woman". Finally we are introduced to the reason that Suzanne is
having these thoughts, his name is Lester Maine. Well being human he has
noticed Suzanne too, and to himself he thinks about her as - "Easy"
- as in easy to love.
Aunt Bea now brings into
the front her nephew, Nicky Salem, and being a warlock and having a wicked
sense of humor he decides to bring author Mr. Rex Pose', an "expert" on
witches, to their little town and introduces him to Suzanne's current interest
publisher Lester. During the introductions Rex decides to relate what he
knows about witches and warlocks with - "See The Facts".
As you can guess by now,
with the proximity of Suzanne's Lester it's getting obvious to the
both of them and we have - "Enchantment". Now while this
is happening Nicky is egging Rex into a new book - "Magic In Manhattan".
Sensing that something is "in the air" Aunt Bea's nemesis shows up and
tries to stir the cauldron up a bit with - "Banbury Cross".
Wouldn't you know it, Suzanne
and Lester have almost fallen over the edge and do - "Could This
Be Love". Again while they are oblivious to what is happening around
them Nicky, being the prankster that he is, is telling Rex ALL about witches
and warlocks with -
"That Was One Of Us". While Nicky is
telling Rex, Suzanne is trying to convince Lester but he's not listening
and we get the duet "Believe Me/Merely A Woman".
Well to celebrate the new
book they throw a party for Rex but during the party that bag of hot air,
Rex, starts telling this room full of witches and warlocks how to "exorcise"
the very people he's talking to and this is just too much for any of them
and they tell him about his "fool proof" method - "Bell, Book, and
Candle". With this Lester realizes that Suzanne was really telling
the truth and runs from the party, and the curtain fades with so many things
left unresolved.
Act Two
We return to the party and
it's getting somewhat dull so Nicky suggests that they all go to "That
Little Club On Eighth Street Called The Zodiac". While they travel
to the "club" we turn back to Lester who is having his own problems and
reflects how "BeWitching" love can really be. Our gang finally
arrive at the "club" only to find Madam du Bois stirring up the natives
and letting them know that this is "Our Rendezvous".
Suzanne is so depressed that
she returns home only to find that she is crying, something that real witches
never do, and seeing this Nicky tries to cheer her up with - "Something
Of Christmas". Now the worst of it is that Lester in his non-infinite
wisdom has gone to see Madam du Bois and is "Taking The Cure".
While Lester is holding his
nose, Suzanne tries to explain why she is feeling what it is she is feeling
with - "Les Is More". Well Nicky decides what she needs is
to get everything off of her mind so with a snap of his fingers he fixes
her up to the "nines" and takes her back to the Zodiac with -
"Pick
Up Your Feet And Move".
Suzanne is picked up by this
and decides that she really doesn't need witchcraft to capture Lester
- "I'll Show Him". While at the club Nicky has had enough
of Rex and the whole mess so he "summons" Lester right in front of Rex
who is astonished at this
"Coming Out".
Lester finally makes his
way back to the "club" and he decides he really loves Suzanne, witch
or not, and they reprise "Could This Be Love". Well that
brings us to the end of Aunt Bea's lecture and everyone on stage has no
trouble in letting us know in a grand finale that there is "Magic
In Love".
